There’s been a lot written up in recent months about iPhone and iPad mobile apps developed by AllergyFree Passport. I’m curious to know how these tools help families with peanut allergies manage and plan their meals on the go.
From what I can tell, the company’s mobile apps are only available on Apple products. I read on the AllergyFree Passport website that the applications are compatible on devices that have iOS 3.0 or later, which is good news for me (I think!). I use a Blackberry and RIM just announced plans to sell a phone later this summer that would allow me to download the programs.
Eat on the Go
The applications promise to users who need to closely manage food allergies, intolerances and special diets the ability to eat out at restaurants and fast food chains safely by accessing ingredient information.
The iEatOutGluten & Allergen Free app allows users to browse detailed menu items and order meals from various types of ethnic cuisines such as Chinese, French, Indian, Italian, Mexican, Steak & Seafood and Thai.

iCanEat OnTheGo “easily pinpoints what menu items you can eat while hiding those which contain eggs, milk, fish, gluten, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts and wheat from 20 U.S. chains,” including Arby’s, Boston Market, Burger King, Carl’s Jr., Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, Corner Bakery, Dairy Queen, Domino’s, Dunkin’ Donuts, Hardee’s, KFC, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Qdoba, Sonic, Steak n Shake, Subway, Taco Bell & Wendy’s.
The apps can be purchased at iTunes and run about $2.99 to $4.99 per download. Think this is the new way to plan and coordinate dining out with allergy-sensitive people?
Let me know what your thoughts are and if you’ve tried it. If nothing else, I’m looking forward to upgrading my phone soon so I can try it out myself since I don’t think my current Blackberry can handle the task.
